Why cyber security matters more than ever

Cyber security used to be something small businesses left until later. Now, it's a real risk. Insurers ask about it before they'll quote, larger clients before they'll sign, and most public sector tenders won't accept a bid without it. The good news is the basics aren't complicated, and the government has set out exactly what they look like.

Cyber Essentials is that baseline: a UK government-backed certification, developed by the National Cyber Security Centre, that shows your business has the right controls in place. We help businesses across Coventry and the West Midlands prepare for it, get certified, and move up to Cyber Essentials Plus where it makes sense.

Cyber Essentials

The basics, properly certified

The basics come down to five controls: firewalls, secure configuration, access, anti-malware, and software updates. You fill in a self-assessment questionnaire that's marked by an independent assessor, and we work with you through it.

What you'll do

Answer the questions about your setup with our help, gather a small amount of supporting evidence, and have a senior person sign off the answers before they're submitted. Most of our clients spend a few hours on this rather than days.

What we'll handle

We do the technical work, draft the answers, and gather the evidence. You sign it off and we handle the submission. We don't put a client forward until we're confident they'll pass, and we handle any follow-up from the assessor.

What you get

A Cyber Essentials certificate that's valid for a year, a listing on the official Cyber Essentials register, and, for UK businesses with turnover under £20 million, automatic Cyber Liability Insurance through IASME, including a 24-hour incident response helpline.

Cyber Essentials Plus

The same controls, independently tested

Cyber Essentials Plus puts the same controls under proper scrutiny. An external assessor tests your systems hands-on with vulnerability scans and device checks, and you've got three months from your Cyber Essentials pass to get it done.

We install a remote agent

After your Cyber Essentials pass, we deploy an agent across your servers and workstations. It runs quietly in the background and gives us visibility of every device in scope.

We scan and fix, every day

The agent produces a daily vulnerability report covering missing patches, configuration drift, and anything falling out of compliance. We work through it ourselves each day and clear what comes up. This isn't a list we hand you. We keep going until the report comes back clean.

We book the technical assessment

Once we're satisfied no issues remain, we book the audit with the external assessor. They come in independently, run their tests, and issue the Plus certificate with a final vulnerability scan report.

Ongoing Renewal and Support

Certification is annual, and so is our involvement

Cyber Essentials is renewed every year, and the standard itself updates from time to time as the threat picture changes. We manage the renewal cycle for our clients, so you won't be scrambling to recertify a fortnight before the deadline. When the standard changes, we let you know what's different, what needs doing, and we get on with it.
